Guumali

Funding area: Inclusive Economy

Guumali is a social change agency enabling Northern Territory First Nations communities to rebuild independent economies and uncover local solutions on their terms. Guumali’s founder Sorrell Ashby is a Gamilaroi woman who has worked across the NT in policy, advocacy and corporate sector roles.

Gumaali’s initiative, The Shed, is built by and for First Nations people and like-minded individuals. The Shed is an always-evolving studio with a mission to audaciously transform northern Australia. The Shed believes that the ingenuity, vision and passion of local innovators, thinkers, creatives, elders, artists and change-makers is as vast as the Territory’s landscape.

Grants

2022 First Nations-led Grant, $15,000

The Shed

To date, The Shed has been funded by Guumali’s consultancy income and volunteer effort.

A $15,000 grant from Mannifera will contribute towards the final refurbishment required to ensure a secure premise, access to a private meeting room and to address cooling so The Shed can open its doors at the end of 2022, offering a comfortable space to retreat and create for its community.

These funds will also contribute towards salary to enable Sorrell to balance her Guumali consultancy work with The Shed’s refurbishment and business development.
